Parashat Ha'azinu: (Re)Turn to God
18 בספטמבר 2026
Right before ascending Mount Nebo to his final resting place, Moses delivers his parting words through a poetic song (Deuteronomy 32:44), reminding Israel of their history and God’s unwavering love and justice.
The song’s use of the imperfect tense hints at recurring patterns, transforming it into a timeless call for every generation to (re)turn to God. It highlights His faithful character:
“Is not he your father, who created you who made you and established you?” (verse 6).
No matter what distracts us, we are reminded that our very existence is a gift from our Creator. Even when we lose sight of our heavenly Father's provision, we can draw from the wisdom of those who came before us:
“ask your father, and he will show you, your elders and they will tell you,” (verse 7).
Their witness to God’s handiwork can point us right back to the path of life.
Moses’ song challenges us to examine the spiritual and moral choices that shape our daily walk. As the High Holy Days approach, we have a clear opportunity to reset our priorities and put God’s love into tangible action, rather than drifting into modern distractions by neglecting His Word.
The Rock
Ha’azinu repeatedly likens God to a Rock, emphasizing His steadfast, unchanging nature. In a shifting world, we are invited to find refuge in Him: the one reliable, eternal foundation regardless of our circumstances. The New Testament carries this imagery forward, identifying Yeshua the Messiah as our cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20), our spiritual rock (1 Corinthians 10:4), and the source of our true sustenance.
Reflection
Throughout the passage, Moses calls us back to the Rock. Let’s pause and anchor ourselves in His goodness, refocusing on the joy of His salvation:
"Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout to the Rock of our salvation!" (Psalm 95:1).
How can we take time today to truly take in the mercy and blessing of our redemption and rest in His steadfastness?
