Amos was a shepherd and tender of sycamore figs from Tekoa in Judah—no prophet by training, and he said so. Around 760 BCE he was sent north to Israel, into a kingdom rich, confident, and rotten beneath. He confronted its shrines and its wealthy, and was told to go home.
