The siege of Jerusalem began on this day. Nebuchadnezzar's army encircled the city, and everything that followed—famine, breach, burning—flowed from it. The fast of the Tenth of Tevet marks the moment disaster became inevitable, and in modern Israel it also serves as a memorial day for the Holocaust's unknown victims.
